Why did I create a Discord server? Across all of my social media platforms and email, and even my Cisco equivalents, I receive content-related questions. I strive to provide personalized and detailed responses which often benefit many people. I've created this Discord server to quickly spread that information to more people.

Non-negotiables

This is not a general-purpose technology hangout or community. The primary focus is to interact regarding my paid video training with Pluralsight and O'Reilly, along with my books at Leanpub. The secondary focus is on my free content, such as packet captures, Postman collections, study guides, white papers, and more. I've also created a career advice channel for those interested, but be prepared for tough love!

Please limit memes, off-topic conversations, jokes, or war stories. Rants, gossip, and other distracting or irrelevant posts are not allowed. If you enjoy my training content and want to rapidly expand your expertise, this space is for you! I respect your time and desire to grow, I ask that you do the same for your peers. In order to facilitate mutual learning and growth, I will ban individuals who ignore these guidelines and/or disrespect other participants.

There are many other networking communities with more flexible moderation guidelines, and I encourage you to also join those communities (RouterGods is my personal favorite).

Expectations and Etiquette

Always remember: garbage in, garbage out. If you ask me to help you troubleshoot a complex problem, I have three expectations:

  1. You've already spent at least 30 minutes trying to solve it.
  2. You've documented everything you've tried so far that didn't work.
  3. You can provide/reference the relevant code or configurations, along with a simple diagram if necessary. If you are labbing up a topic from one of my courses, reference the specific point in the course and the files in question.

Often, documenting current state and your troubleshooting process will make the problem more clear to you. Do us both a favor and assemble this information before requesting my help! Again, let's be respectful of everyone's time.

How to Join

To join the server, go to my "About Me" page and email me. The subject of the email should begin with the word "Discord" and should be followed by your full name. For example: "Discord Jane Doe". Do not include any content in the body of the email as I will not read it. I will respond with an invitation link.

Note that I am deliberately requiring humans to follow a manual process to minimize admitting bots. Although these invitation links expire after a few days, please do not forward them to anyone else. Simply ask others who are interested in joining my server to read this blog and follow the aforementioned process.
